Physics is an important subject for students aspiring to become engineers or scientists in the future. Physics is one of the three main subjects along with chemistry and mathematics which make the syllabus of JEE Mains. CBSE syllabus of both 11th and 12th is asked in JEE Main examination, therefore the questions asked in JEE Main physics are from 11th and 12th class syllabus only. Students mostly find physics questions difficult from chemistry and mathematics because questions asked in physics test a student’s fundamental and analytical understanding, therefore students must have developed advanced skills to answer numerical questions easily.

Physics being an analytical subject cannot be understood by just memorizing concepts and principles. It is a subject that needs to be visualized and understood through all the fundamentals and principles. Students are required to understand the application of all those concepts and principles. Students should study physics with a logical and analytical approach to understand it better.

To score well in JEE Mains physics students should at least know all the important chapters. Important topics listed below should be prepared well as they carry high-weightage.

1. Electrostatics and magnetism – This is a very important topic as 5-6 questions are asked every year from magnetism and electrostatics. An utmost clarity of concepts is required in this chapter to score well. The most important concepts from these chapters are capacitors, Biot-Savart law, coulomb’s law, bar magnets, and magnetic field lines, and electric field and flux.

2. Mechanics – It alone consists of 9 chapters in total and carries the highest weightage. Students should dedicate the appropriate amount of time to each chapter and should put in equal effort. Some important concepts from this topic are equations of motion, acceleration due to gravity, Kepler’s law, a moment of inertia, simple harmonic motion, and projectile motion.

3. Optics – It is one of the scoring chapters and is very important. Questions asked from this chapter are NCERT based but are a little tricky. To score well in this chapter students should clear all the concepts and should go through advanced optics. Some important concepts from this chapter are total internal reflection, a combination of lenses, Huygens principle, reflection, and refraction.

4.  Heat and Thermodynamics – Students should clear all their basics for this topic. Zeroth law of thermodynamics, joule’s law, and the first law of thermodynamics are very important from an exam point of view. Students should practice sample paper for the Carnot engine. Kinetic theory of gases is easy and can be scored if prepared well.

5.  Kinematics – Many chapters are based on kinematics. Students mostly find this easy and interesting. Students should focus on concepts like finding maximum height, range, flight time, and velocity. To remember all the formulas students should write them on paper. Derivations and theorems should be practiced to understand formulas.

6. Motion of system of particles and rigid body – Students should have numerical questions from topics like angular momentum, rolling motion, and conservation. Parallel and perpendicular axes theorems are considered important for questions related to torque. Circular motion is also very important.

7. Modern physics – It is very important for both JEE Mains and JEE Advanced. Many questions are asked from this chapter. Some important concepts in this chapter are Nuclear fission and fusion, the dual nature of matter and x-rays, and Bohr’s model. This can be a scoring chapter if all the concepts are crystal clear.

Besides learning all the important topics students should also follow some effective strategies to ace JEE Main Physics exam preparation.

1.  Time management – Students should give equal time to all the important chapters mentioned above. Students should practice numerical questions as much as possible to increase their speed of attempting questions. Students should divide their study hours into small study sessions for productive studying and should study for long hours when they feel most productive. Many questions asked are theoretical and should not be given more than one minute.

2. Practice a lot – In physics numerical questions need a lot of practice. Students should practice JEE Main Physics Important Questions for getting a better understanding of concepts. Students are advised to attempt easy and approachable questions first as they help in scoring good marks in JEE Mains. Students should practice questions from NCERT first before moving forward to other books. NCERT clears all the doubts and concepts, and consists of a variety of questions therefore should be practised first.

3. Understand all the diagrams well – Diagrams explain a concept more easily in physics. Diagrams explain the mechanism of the machine. For example, a diagram of an AC generator explains its mechanism and its components more clearly. Students should practice diagrams regularly to remember concepts. Diagrams help in solving mechanics questions and are used in derivations of many important formulas like ohm’s law, refraction of light through a glass prism, and AC and DC generators.

4. Focus on strong points – Students usually make a mistake by giving a lot of time to topics which they find difficult, this loosens their grip on other topics and negatively affects JEE Mains result. Before the JEE Main exam students should only focus on strengthening the topics in which they are confident and strong. Students should make sure that every concept is covered in their strong chapters. They should avoid starting anything new just before the examination.

5.  Stay healthy – The most important thing above all is to stay healthy both physically and mentally. Physics is an interesting and deep subject because of which many students get so immersed in it that they forget to take care of their health. Students should take short breaks between long hours of study to relax a bit. Along with breaks, a proper sleep of 8 hours is a must. Students should keep themselves mentally strong and should leave no room for self-doubt.

Conclusion – For preparing physics for JEE Mains examination students should concentrate on all their lectures and should clear doubts as soon as they occur. Students should follow the strategies mentioned above to score well in the physics section of JEE Main examination.
